The health care reform bill now moving through the U.S. Senate includes an individual mandate, which means that if you are not covered by your employer, you will be forced to buy an insurance policy. That policy will have to cover everything Congress thinks you ought to have, which means high-powered lobbyists, and the politicians and bureaucrats they influence, will determine the diseases and devices your policy covers. We should be careful in criticizing government proposals to ration health care. In every other area of government, we want rationing. We want our leaders to decide on priorities and find the least expensive, most efficient way to fulfill and pay for them. We argue that government should eliminate high-cost, low-result expenses. With all the talk about the so-called "right to health care," it's important to consider what "rights" really are. In general, there are two types of rights. One type is intrinsic to us as humans. Some call these "fundamental rights" and others call them "human rights." Our nation's founders labeled them "inalienable rights." These are rights that demand nothing from other people - nothing, that is, except respect. The right to speak freely, to worship as we please, and to defend our property are among these.
